Change Restart Service Attempts from 1 to 3 or help with OOM Error
Hi,
I apologise if this has been asked before. As a full-time carer, I don't have very much time.
My server keeps getting the following error:
Out of memory: A process was terminated because the system is low on memory.
Many services fail to restart after only one attempt. Is there a way to set WHM to up the restart attempts to 3? This is a default for Windows services, but I don't know as much with Linux.
The server has 6gb ram and when the OOM happens, there's at least 5gb of memory free. My server was on the old CentOS 7, and has now been migrated to AlmaLinux v8.10.0 STANDARD. Running cPanel v124.0.10.
When moving, there was quite a few issues, some misconfigurations, mainly email issues as well as nameserver/hostname issues. Most now seem stable, but occasionally I get services fail, mainly for email. On mobile, I keep getting prompted to enter my password, yet if I restart the services or reboot the server, this goes away.
As you can understand. Being a fill-time carer for an end-of-life parent, I rely on email a lot and I need to find out what's causing the service failures and fix the OOM errors, so any help would be very much appreciated. IMAGE attached.
Thank you.
Mike.

Hey there! If this is related to the email service failing (I couldn't tell from the screenshots)I would recommend checking the log at /var/log/exim_mainlog around that time to see if that gives you any additional clues. You're also always welcome to submit a ticket to have this investigated directly on the system, as it does seem odd for there to be so much free RAM but you are still receiving OOM errors - this could be an indication of a problem with the parent server if this is a VPS machine of some sort.

Hi,
Apologies for the delay getting back to you, I didn't get any notification.
Yes, it's a VPS. Every so often services fail (see below for which) but are not restarted, unless I manually restart them or reboot the server.
Services that all fail are:
Ifd
chkservdThere are a couple more. My question was can the restart attempts be changed to automatically restart the services more than one attempt?
As stated. My hosting was migrated from CentOS7 to Alma Linux. VPS to VPS.
Since I rebooted the VPS yesterday, nothing has failed. So I'll keep an eye on it and if it happens again, I'll submit a ticket.
Thanks again.
Mike.

No, there is no way to change the number of restart attempts - everything should either restart the first time and send you an email letting you know it was restarted, or the restart fails and you get an email telling you why. Either way you should be receiving a notification about why the issue is happening.
