Assistance Required: Disk Usage Discrepancy in cPanel Account
Dear cPanel Support Team,
I hope this email finds you well.
I am writing to seek assistance with an issue I am encountering in my cPanel account. The Disk Usage section in my cPanel dashboard is displaying the following:
- Email Account Usage: 44 GB
- Other Usage: 55 GB
Upon further investigation through the terminal using the du -sh
command, I have found that the majority of the disk usage is located in the /mail
directory. However, it seems that this usage is not being categorized correctly in the Disk Usage section, as most of it appears under "Other Usage" rather than "Email Account Usage."
I would appreciate your guidance on resolving this discrepancy. Specifically, I would like to:
- Understand why the Disk Usage section is reporting the data incorrectly.
- Correct the categorization so that the
/mail
directory usage is properly reflected under "Email Account Usage."
Please let me know if you require additional information or access details to investigate further.
Thank you for your assistance, and I look forward to your response.

Hey there! "Other Usage" are files that are owned by your cPanel user account, but not located in the user's home directory of /home/username. These could be backups that have been moved by the server admin.
I'm not sure what you mean by the "/mail" directory as that isn't something that would have been created by cPanel. Is that a custom area you created on the server to store email? If so, cPanel wouldn't know about that area and that is likely why it is showing up in Other Usage.

What I mean is that all the usage is displayed in the user mail directory, which is located at /home/username/mail/domain_name. The entire 99GB of usage is in that directory, but in the disk usage option, it shows 44GB under Email Account Usage and 55GB under Other Usage.

Thanks for the additional details. I don't have a good explanation for why that might be happening unless there is incorrect ownership or permissions on one of the mail directories.
If that isn't the case, could you submit a ticket so this can be investigated?

What should be the permission of the mail directory?

Both /home/user/mail and /home/user/mail/domain.com are 751 user:user permissions.
