Question About cPanel Server Migration with Linked Node
Hello!
I am migrating my cPanel CentOS 7 server to a new infrastructure in another data center running AlmaLinux 8.
Currently, my old server has a Linked Node for managing accounts with high email volumes. During the migration process, I have some questions regarding how to handle the accounts linked to the Node.
To link the Node to my new server, I first need to unlink it from the current server. However, I have the following concerns:
- Can I simply unlink the Node from the old server, add it to the new server, migrate only the account data from the old server to the new one, and then reattach the Node?
- Or do I need to move all accounts back to the main server first before linking the Node to the new infrastructure?
I found this guide that discusses the topic, but I found the explanation somewhat confusing and still have some doubts:
https://docs.cpanel.net/knowledge-base/general-systems-administration/cpanel-linked-nodes-guide/
In the section "Transfer accounts that have been distributed to a linked server", specifically in step 3, it only mentions using the transfer tool, but it does not clearly state whether I need to migrate the content back to the parent server (PAI) first or if I can just transfer the main account and link the Node to the new server afterward.
Could you provide a clearer understanding of the best approach for this migration?
I appreciate your help!
Thank you.

Hey there! I honestly have no idea on this one - I've reached out to some people internally and I'll let you know what I find out!

After reading the docs a bit, it looks like steps 1 and 2 clear up the confusion around step 3. Step 1 says to dedistribute the accounts, and step 2 says you have to unlink the node. I would expect that dedistributing the accounts handles the data move back to the parent for you.

Hello, thank you for your response!
I understand, but I’m still a bit confused about the first two steps of the process.
This migration will be quite challenging, especially since my old server has limited free space. Having to move all accounts back, transfer them, delete them, then unlink the Child Node from the old server, link it to the new one, and repeat the entire process would make the operation extremely complex and inefficient.
It would be ideal if there were a simpler and more flexible way to move the Child Node without so many intermediate steps.
Regardless, I really appreciate your effort in clarifying my question. Your explanation was very helpful!
Best regards,

You're very welcome - unfortunately I don't have a more automated method available at this time, but if you run into anything you'd like to see changed as you work through that process you can always post here or you can submit a feature request over at features.cpanel.net as I review that area as well.
