DNS Only - Parent zones? Replace ns1 ns2 entries? Delete extra zones?
AnsweredI'm a little confused about where my zones should be created, and which zones I ultimately need with my basic DNS Only config.
I have one DNS Only server and one WHM server.
My intention is to have ns1.dnsonly.tld and ns2.dnsonly.tld on the DNS Only server, and for those to be the nameservers for all accounts on the WHM server example.hostname.tld.
But the DNS Only installation didn't create a dnsonly.tld zone anywhere. It only created a zone for each of ns1.dnsonly.tld and ns2.dnsonly.tld. Shouldn't there be a dnsonly.tld zone somewhere? I can't create it using the DNS Only interface, so I created it over on my WHM server. Does that make sense?
In a related problem, I now have THREE sets of ns1 and ns2 zones as well as extra parent zones for those ns values. I have ns1.hostingprovider.tld which is what my hosting provider created before I named my hostname. Then I have ns1.hostname.tld, which was created before I clustered with the DNS Only server. And finally, I have ns1.dnsonly.tld which I guess got created locally by WHM when I identified my ns1.dnsonly.tld and ns2.dnsonly.tld as my nameservers via the WHM interface.
Can I just delete all those extra zones, clean up all the entries so that I don't have ANY ns1/ns2 zones any longer, and just have single dnsonly.tld zone, and inside that zone make sure there are entries for ns1 and ns2 that point correctly to the DNS Only server?
I'm having difficulty understanding what is redundant, what's leftover detritus from the config/installation process, and what's actually necessary.

Question 1: But the DNS Only installation didn't create a dnsonly.tld zone anywhere. It only created a zone for each of ns1.dnsonly.tld and ns2.dnsonly.tld. Shouldn't there be a dnsonly.tld zone somewhere? I can't create it using the DNS Only interface, so I created it over on my WHM server. Does that make sense?
Answer: That's the intended behavior. You don't create zones on the DNS Only machine, as it should getting the zone data from the parent server.
Question 2: Can I just delete all those extra zones, clean up all the entries so that I don't have ANY ns1/ns2 zones any longer, and just have single dnsonly.tld zone, and inside that zone make sure there are entries for ns1 and ns2 that point correctly to the DNS Only server?
Answer: That's how I do it! I remove any ns1/ns2.domain.com zone files and ensure I have the correct A records in the main domain.com zone file to avoid confusion.

That's super helpful, and confirms what I hoped, thanks.
