Backup Questions - Incremental vs Compressed / Jetbackup vs Default
Hi. We're migrating from a dedicated server to a VPS and want to determine how best to setup backups on the new server.
On our current server we use the built-in WHM backups to a separate local backup storage drive. We retain 5 daily, 3 weekly, and 2 monthly compressed backups. And we backup both individual accounts and system files. This currently equates to 650GB of backup storage for our roughly 50 accounts and 150GB of sever storage.
While we do like how the current backup setup functions, we're finding that getting an additional local backup storage drive on a VPS may not be possible. And we understand that a local drive is mandatory for WHM/cPanel backups, regardless of whether we also store them on a remote storage service. So want to determine our options.
BUILT-IN WHM/CPANEL BACKUPS - SWITCHING TO INCREMENTAL:
1) If we switch to incremental backups from our current compressed, any really rough idea on the amount of storage savings we might expect based on our stats above?
2) If we switch to incremental backups, do the retention & restore options remain the same (i.e., can we retain 5 daily, 3 weekly, 2 monthly restore points)?
3) If we switch to incremental backups, can we still do file restores in addition to full accounts?
SWITCHING TO JETBACKUP
If we are unable to get a local storage drive for default WHM backups, I'm guessing something like JetBackup may be one of our only choices, correct? We're completely unfamiliar with JetBackup, so some insight on the differences would be helpful.
4) In looking at how we currently do backups above (e.g., accounts and system, retention, etc.), what would be the biggest things we would lose if moving to JetBackup?
5) Does JetBackup allow for either full account or individual file restores from the same backups like WHM backups do?
6) The current default backups do tax our server a fair amount, though we schedule for middle-of-the-night to lessen the effect. Would JetBackups potentially tax the system less/more/same?
Anything else that we should know about JetBackups and how they differ from default WHM/cPanel backups would be welcomed! Thank you.

Hey there! I'll answer these in order to make sure we don't overlook anything!
1 - There's really no way to answer this except "run the incrementals once and see." Sorry I can't offer a better guess here.
2 - Yes, you can still keep those retention options.
3 - It sure does!
4 - I wouldn't expect you to lose anything. In fact, JetBackup has many more options above and beyond what are included in the WHM >> Backup Configuration page, so you'll find far more settings and options available with that tool.
5 - It does! https://docs.jetbackup.com/v5.3/userpanel/restoreAndDownload.html#restoreanddownloadaccountsuser
6 - This is another one that's tricky to answer, but I'd guess it would be around the same. The backup tool isn't typically the strain, it's the copying and compression. Switching to incrementals is where you're see the savings here.
