Using DNS zone files with PowerDNS?
Can I still use DNS zone files when I switch from BIND to PowerDNS nameserver?

Hey hey! Yes, absolutely - from an end-user perspective there should be no difference between the two nameserver choices.

Is there something I need to do to configure PowerDNS to use them, because I'm not sure they are used by default?
Are there any downsides to using these files with pDNS? For example, pDNS is better because it consumes fewer resources. Would using these files defeat the purpose?

Can you let me know specifically which files you're referring to here? It's not entirely clear to me which zone files we're talking about.

Files in /var/named

I guess I don't understand the basis of the question then - how are you seeing those zones not being used?

I have read that PowerDNS doesn't use the actual BIND files from /var/named, like BIND does. These are actual DNS zone files where cPanel/WHM stores all the records. It's so much easier to edit these files directly than going through DNS Zone Manager interface. After editing files I simply restart the DNS server and values get updated in cPanel.

You can continue editing those files just the same as you did before when you switch to PowerDNS - at least in the land of cPanel, that doesn't change.
