Question regarding DNS clustering
We have our main whm server and we just setup a smaller dev/test server that I was thinking about setting up as a second dns server for our main production server via DNS clustering.
I have been reading the documentation regarding the structures and it says that do not setup the nameserver to synchronize data to a cpanel & whm server, also it says Don't link dedicated WHM servers to each other.
However in the DNS Cluster document under DNS role, it states that the synchronize role is used by most administrators that have standard profile servers, which both of my servers are standard profile.
I was just wondering if I could get a little more clarity and/or recommendations.

Hey there! In general:
-you don't want the nameservers to sync backwards to the WHM servers. This causes zones to appear on the WHM server that aren't owned by a cPanel account, leading to confusion in the future
and
-you don't want to link WHM machines to each other for the same reason, and also that *any* DNS change on any server will force a sync, leading to wasted resource usage. In 99% of configurations it's best to have the WHM server(s) linked to just the nameservers.

OK, so it is best to leave the 2 servers be and spin up a dns only instance, then dns cluster both servers to that server that will be setup as a stand alone dns server.
In regards to zones not being tied to cpanel accounts, the only zone that would come across that is not tied to a cpanel account would be the initial DNS Zone that gets created when you first configure the server, all other zones are tied to cpanel accounts.

Correct.
And what I meant about not being owned by an account is if you have the reverse sync on so things get copied to the web server you will have a bunch of DNS zones *on the webserver* that aren't associated with any cPanel account.
But yes, create the 2 servers, create the DNS Only machine, you're good to go.
