Mirgating RockyLinux to AlmaLinux
Hi all,
based on this post: https://support.cpanel.net/hc/en-us/community/posts/36019166354327-Rocky-Linux-Support-Deprecation-Announcement
Rock Linus will soon no longer be supported. The post holdas a script to converte/migrate to AlmaLinux. Is it save to run this? What are the risk of things getting corrupted, wrongly configured, sites going down?
Also what would be the risk of not converting to AlmaLinux?
Thanks a lot,
Tino

Hey there! As with any major change to your system it's always advisable to have backups in place just in case something were to go wrong. However, we've extensively tested that script and had good results.
The only risk of staying on RockyLinux at this time is that you'll be stuck on version 132, which will keep you from receiving the latest udpates as version 134 is expected to reach Stable and the LTS tier within the next two months.

Thanks a lot for the reply.
Will 132 still receive securtiy updates?
Also we are on a IBM server (classical infrastructure), their support suggested to get a new server instance and move everything there. Seems a bit overkill to me. What do you think?
Any suggestions on how to get a full backup of a RockyLinux server?0 -
132 will not receive updates once it makes its way out of the tiers.
A traditional migration to a new machine is also a good option, especially if you are on slightly older hardware and wanted to upgrade.
For cPanel account restorations you only need the data that is created in the cPanel backups configured on your server. We don't provide a server "image" or OS-level backup tool.

Well we actually did move to a new server not that long ago and are totally happy with our current server. And since we run about 12 websites on it we would like to just keep it a bit longer if possible. The hardware is great.
Yes we know about the cPanel account backups. For server image or OS backups we currently don't know about a solution.0 -
Most people don't backup the OS. If you have an issue with your personal laptop, you reinstall the OS and restore the data, so a server wouldn't be any different.
If you have the "Backup System Files" option selected in the WHM >> Backup Configuration that will let you restore key server settings: https://docs.cpanel.net/whm/backup/backup-configuration/#files

Ok got it. Thanks. We will consider running the script. If I have any further questions I will ask here.
Thanks a lot for the quick replies and support.0 -
