Outlook - ERR [SYS/TEMP] Temporary authentication failure. cpanel

Hello,

After running a system update (yum update) and a forced cPanel update (/scripts/upcp --force), we started receiving authentication errors on mail services.

Users are unable to authenticate via Outlook / IMAP / POP3 and the following error is returned:

-ERR [SYS/TEMP] Temporary authentication failure

Example Outlook error:
Task 'mail@testmail.com - Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC92): Your email server rejected your login.

The issue started immediately after the updates were completed.

We tested authentication via Doveadm and authentication services appear to be failing temporarily.

Could you please check the mail authentication stack (Dovecot / PAM / cPanel authentication services) and advise what may have been broken after the updates?

  Did you restart Dovecot?

  Did you check /var/log/maillog?   grep mail@testmail.com /var/log/maillog

  Make sure cpsrvd is running ( ps auwx|grep cpsrvd )

  We haven't had any recent widespread reports of dovecot authentication issues from updates, so this may be specific to your environment rather than a general update-related problem.

   

  To help narrow this down, could you please provide a few recent authentication-related entries from the /var/log/maillog around the time the failures occur? In particular, we’re looking for any Dovecot, auth, or PAM-related errors that coincide with the login attempts.
