Roundcube’s forced preview pane is a horrible usability downgrade
The Roundcube layout now appearing in my Bluehost webmail makes basic email management significantly worse.
The third column—the message preview pane—occupies more than half my desktop screen, even when it is completely blank. Meanwhile, the second column, containing the information needed to manage my inbox, is squeezed into a narrow strip. Subjects are truncated, and scanning messages becomes unnecessarily difficult.
The message list is where users decide what deserves their attention. Sender, subject, date, and attachment indicators let us quickly identify, compare, sort, and select messages. Shrinking that information to accommodate a compulsory preview pane undermines this basic workflow. It creates extra clicking just to discover information that should already be visible in the list.
A large monitor should provide more room to see useful information. This layout wastes that space and leaves users struggling with truncated subjects.
Making the preview pane compulsory, while removing the practical option to choose another layout, is an idiotic design decision. A preview pane can be useful to people who want it. Users should have control over whether it occupies their screen.
Please provide:
- A setting to completely disable the preview pane.
- A message list that expands into the recovered space, with readable sender, subject, date, and attachment information.
- Adjustable column widths and a layout preference that remains saved.
- The ability to select and manage messages without automatically previewing them.
These are basic email usability controls. Users should not need browser extensions, custom CSS, or a replacement email client to recover a usable inbox.

I've spoken with the team about this to see if we can get some changes made. I don't have any official details I can share just yet, but if we make any changes that will improve Roundcube I'll be sure to make an announcement post here on the Forums as that will be a welcome change for many users.
