Inquiry regarding filesystem recommendation and inode limits for cPanel + CloudLinux
I am planning to purchase a new Dedicated Server to run cPanel alongside CloudLinux.
Before placing my order, I would like to consult with your technical team regarding the filesystem setup. The server will host accounts with a high volume of small files—primarily email accounts (IMAP/POP3) storing thousands of individual messages—which has previously caused us to hit inode capacity limits on standard Ext4 setups.
Could you please confirm the following details regarding the OS provisioning?
-
Filesystem Recommendation: Is XFS available as the default filesystem for the OS installation (e.g., AlmaLinux 9 / Rocky Linux 9)?
-
Quota Support: Do your custom OS images support XFS quota options (
usrquota/prjquota) out of the box so cPanel and CloudLinux LVE Manager can handle disk and inode quotas seamlessly? -
Partitioning: Can the
/homepartition (or root/) be formatted with XFS to allow dynamic inode allocation and avoid fixed inode limits?
Thank you in advance for your guidance.

Hey there! I'll answer these in order to make sure I don't miss anything.
1 - yes, XFS is the recommended default filesystem for new installations, as found here: https://docs.cpanel.net/installation-guide/system-requirements-almalinux/#filesystems
I wouldn't recommend running RockyLinux as that reached end-of-life in cPanel version 134, so you wouldn't be able to install cPanel on that OS.
2 - It works, but isn't technically something we provide support for: https://support.cpanel.net/hc/en-us/articles/360058278234-Enabling-XFS-quotas
3 - Yes. We highlight that ability in the 5th paragraph here: https://www.cpanel.net/blog/general-knowledge/how-to-manage-inode-quotas-and-control-inode-usage/
Let me know if you need any other specifics!

Hi @cPRex,
Thanks for the quick reply and the links.
While I see that AlmaLinux + XFS is the recommended baseline, point #2 leaves me with a few doubts.
If cPanel officially recommends XFS as the default filesystem, why are XFS quotas still classified as something "not technically supported"? Quota management is a core feature for any web hosting environment (especially when running CloudLinux to enforce user limits). Having to rely on manual kernel parameters (
rootflags) and extra configuration steps for a recommended filesystem feels a bit contradictory. Is there any plan to natively automate XFS quota initialization during the cPanel installation process in future releases?Appreciate your insights on this before I lock in this new deployment.

What I mean is, we aren't going to adjust the operating system for you to handle those properly. "Not supported" means the admin has to handle that configuration, so you'd need to configure fstab and related items before the cPanel installation.
If you'd like, I can submit a feature request for the installer to check for these settings or to see if that's something we'd consider adding?
