NLST FTP command is no longer working

Why am I receiving an "invalid command" error when trying to execute the NLST command over an FTP connection?

PureFTP has changed the functionality of the NLST command in version 1.0.48, which is listed in their changelogs here:

Since that change is not part of the cPanel system, there is no way to reactivate this behavior on the machine, so alternatives should be investigated.
