Safe to Disable DNS Service
All of the sites that we manage on our server are using external services (GoDaddy, Cloudflare) to serve DNS. I'd like to turn off the DNS service on our server if it is not needed. Is it safe to disable the DNS server if I am sure all of the nameservers are off site, or are there things that rely on the DNS service to function such as AutoSSL/LetsEncrypt, DKIM or others?

Hey there! If you're sure all your DNS is being handled on a remote system there is no requirement for you to run the DNS service. Tools like AutoSSL will still work as they make external connections to check for the DNS resolution of domains. If you do see anything that stops working that you didn't expect, just let me know so I can investigate that, but I would expect you'll be just fine. 0 -
I don't host any name servers on my Server, these are all handled on my registra admin panel, along with all my DNS entries. Inside "Service Configuration > Nameserver Selection", I have no NS services configured to run. Inside "Service manager" it says You have disabled the DNS Server. Visit the NameServer Selection page to enable this service. 0 -
May I also add that I switched to this method of handling my DNS about 2 years ago, and I'm not aware of any issues. Probably the hardest part of doing this, is having to create mydns entries manually. However, having said that, If I create a new domain, I just copy what I have from a working DNS table, which is a 5 minute job. 0
