Proper way to upgrade packages and kernel?
Hello,
i would like to ask what is the best practice for upgrading my cpanel server (now cpanel v110.0.7) to cpanel v110.0.15 and also upgrade my centos 7.9 kernel from v3.10.0-1160.71.1.el7.x86_64 to what is now available.
Should i use the System update feature in WHM to update packages and kernel? Should i update the kernel BEFORE the cpanel upgrade? Are any necessary packages updated when cpanel is updated?
Are there any known issues with newer kernel versions of CentOS 7.9?
Unofortunately i cannot upgrade to any newer versions that cpanal v110 because of CentOS 7 . I plan to elevate to Almalinux next year.

cPanel should be auto updating via upcp nightly. To update they kernel, you'll prob. want to do that via Linux shell with yum, dnf or apt depending on your install. You'll have to reboot the server for the new kernel to take effect anyways.

ffeingol yes i know that . My question is if the System update option inside WHM, does the same job and if there are any known issues with later kernel versions of CentOS 7.9 kernel.
Yesterday i stumbled accross this thread and since i am using CSF i am not sure if i will face any problems updating the kernel ...

Even though the cPanel updates are pinned to version 110, your nightly update will still attempt to update the system packages. From I am finding, version 110 is not affected by the issue in that case.

cPRex I have disabled automatic updates just to have control.
I plan just to go to v.110.0.15 ( i am currently in v110.0.7) and also update the kernel.
You think that I won't have any issues. But just to be sure shall I wait for v.110.0.17?
Do you have any info on when will it be released?0 -
I'm not entirely sure when that will be released. It's been going through testing for a few days so I would guess it comes out before the end of the year, but that is just a personal guess from me.

Is there any way I can be confident that upgrading to v110.0.15 and also updating my kernel will NOT cause me any issues with dovecot solr plugin ? Right now (at v110.0.7) everything seems to work properly

I've learned there are never any guarantees - if you are that concerned about this issue coming up it would be best to wait.

cPRex i see that v110.0.17 is out (https://docs.cpanel.net/changelogs/110-change-log/) BUT i don't see case CPANEL-42922 (https://support.cpanel.net/hc/en-us/articles/19253971633303?input_string=cpanel-dovecot-solr+%22extension+owner+is+not+supported,+missing+kernel+module%22) solved....
Am i right?

That case was fixed as part of work in CPANEL-43124, so you'll see that in the changelog, but you are good to go now!

cPRex thank you for the information!
I will proceed with updating to v.110.0.17 in the next couple of days.
However, i still have a couple of questions regarding the server packages and kernel update features.
I plan to do the following steps, in that order :
1. Use the WHM's "Upgrade to Latest version" feature to upgrade the cpanel / whm version
2. Use the WHM's "System Update" feature to upgrade the kernel and the packages
Will that be sufficient?
Do i also need to run the "Update System Software" (https://docs.cpanel.net/whm/software/update-server-software/) feature to update dependencies OR that is already been taken care by the "Upgrade to Latest Version" feature or the "System Update" feature? All these cpanel update scripts always confused me on what each one is suppose to be doing :(
Thank you in advance.

The order you perform this work doesn't really matter as the tools aren't dependent on each other. I can't say if you *need* to run the System Update tool or not, but it's never a bad idea.
No, you wouldn't need to run the "Update System Software" if you do the other two.
