Symptoms

MySQL 8.0.38-39 fails to start:

Most likely, you have hit a bug, but this error can also be caused by malfunctioning hardware.

Description 

MySQL 8.0.38 and 8.0.39 were released upstream. After automatic updates, there are multiple reports that MySQL is not starting.

Workaround

Updating MySQL to 8.0.40+ will resolve this issue. You can update the packages with your operating system's package manager:
