Question
Can I use "Incremental" Backup Type when using an additional remote destination to update and save the information that has changed since my last backup?
Answer
There are a few methods in which the backup configuration can be set. Backup Configuration interface allows system administrators to customize their scheduled backups.
Whether that be either of the following Backup Types:
- Compressed — Select this setting to save all of your information in a compressed format. This setting uses less disk space but requires more time to finish a backup.
- Uncompressed — Select this setting to save all of your information in an uncompressed format. This setting uses more disk space but runs faster than Compressed backups.
- Incremental — Select this setting to save all of your files in the directory tree. This setting uses a combination of hard links and files for speed and to save disk space.
If selecting incremental backups, the system will not change or alter the state of your existing non-incremental backup destinations.
When setting up an additional remote destination; you can only use Rsync transport with incremental backups and additional destinations.
When you set up incremental backups the first time, the system will need at least enough space to back up any given account one full time. Once an account is backed up, it will be queued for transport. While the next account is being backed up, the first backup is transferred to the remote server. Once the backup is transferred, it will be deleted on the local server if you disable the checkbox for "Retain Backups in the Default Backup Directory".
Once the initial backups are completed, each backup should require less space to complete on the local server, and less space to transfer as well since only files that have changed are backed up.
