The headers of a message provide detailed information on the routing of a message and are an immense help in troubleshooting email-related issues. Because they contain more information than most would need or want, they are usually available but hidden.
Procedure
Here is how to find email headers in some of the most popular email clients:
Thunderbird
- Open the message
- Click the "more" dropdown
- Select "View Source"
Apple Mail
- Highlight the message
- Click "View / Message / All headers"
Outlook for Windows
- Open the message in a new window
- Click "File / Properties / Headers"
Gmail
- Open the message
- Click the 3 dot menu on the right
- Select "Show Original"
Yahoo! Mail
- Open the email message
- Click the 3 dot menu at the top
- Click "View Raw Message"
Outlook.com, Live.com, Hotmail
- Open the message
- Click the dropdown menu
- Select "View message source"
Roundcube
- Highlight email message
- Click the 3 dots menu
- Click "Show Source"
