Roundcube fails to send mail with 250 error

Symptoms

Roundcube fails to send mail, and this error appears in the Roundcube window:

SMTP Problem (250): Authentication failed.

Description 

This error appears when the Exim service is not running.

Workaround

Restart Exim with this command:

/scripts/restartsrv_exim
