Question
We received an automated message informing us that our server does not monitor the "LMTP (Local Mail Transport Protocol) Server". I've looked around. I cannot find documentation as to what this is technically monitoring or what enabling this monitor will do for us. Could you please advise?
Answer
LMTP is the local mail transfer protocol for Dovecot. Emails are received to Exim, then handed off to Dovecot/LMTP to deliver local users' emails. It is best to monitor this service to ensure cPanel detects Dovecot failures when attempting to deliver emails to local users.
More information on the service can be found in the documentation.
WHM Service Configuration - Service Manager
Note: Dovecot Mailserver utilizes several services and different protocols to handle mail in a variety of ways.
- POP3 ( Used for retrieving the emails already stored in the user's inbox )
- IMAP ( Used for retrieving the emails already stored in the user's inbox )
- LMTP ( Used for delivering emails to local users indexes )
